Southeast Alaska Health Education Center
The Southeast Alaska Area Health Education Center (AHEC) is tasked with creating and supporting health care workers from Metlakatla to Yakutat.
One of six regional offices in Alaska, the Southeast AK AHEC offers programs and partnerships to create future health care workers along with providing continuing education opportunities for the region's healthcare workforce.
The Southeast Alaska AHEC partners with academic institutions (University of Alaska, Alaska Pacific University, University of Washington, WWAMI schools, etc.), health care facilities, private practices and school districts to provide the following services:
- K-12 programs
- AHEC Scholars - a program for students enrolled in current health care programs (certificate to doctorate)
- Community-based experiential learning opportunities
- Continuing education programs
The AHEC program develops and enhances education and training networks within communities, academic institutions and community-based organizations.
In turn, these networks support Bureau of Health Workforce's (BHW) strategic priorities to increase diversity among health professionals, broaden the distribution of the health workforce, enhance health care quality, improve health care delivery to rural and underserved areas and populations and create more health care workers.
